The first week of the new season brings thousands of people
who flock to, and around the ballpark in Cincinnati. As I mentioned in a
previous post, I attended opening day on April first. It was the most people at
a regular season game at Great American Ballpark, with 43,148 guests mostly
dressed in red.
The game was a pitching battle most of the day. The Reds
gave up a run early to the opposing team, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim,
but got that run back in the later innings. The game lasted into the night,
going to 13 innings (a regular game is scheduled for 9 innings). It seemed no
body was hitting the ball, the reds ended up with three hits in 13 innings! The
Angels finally broke it up when they scored 2 runs in the top up the 13th,
the Reds could not get the bats going and fell to Los Angeles 3-1.
Opening Day was a bit rough to watch as a reds fan, the
offense was lacking to say the least. Of course I began to worry, even if there
are 162 games in a season. With that being said I was not satisfied with what I
witnessed during the first game, so I had to attend again this past Friday,
April sixth.
This was more like it! A totally different team than I had
seen play that past Monday. A total of 15 runs scored on 19 hits! The most
impressive thing was the team in red hit six; yes six homeruns, with 12 of their
runs coming off of homeruns. The Washington Nationals, the opposing team, did
not muster a run in all game! The final was 15-0 Redlegs!
If you happen to follow the Reds then you know they are more
than capable of putting up this type of offense any given day. With that being
said there are other good teams who can do the same thing, so we can’t expect
that output every game.
The Reds since Opening Day have only lost one other time;
they have 5 wins and only 2 losses in this early season.
